How to Prepare for a Therapy Session

Your First Therapy Session

Is my chair comfy enough? Do I need ear phones? Can I join from my mobile? If it’s your first online therapy session, you’ll understandably have questions about how to prepare. Here are a few things to think about beforehand to help you get ready.

What Do You Need for Zoom Therapy?

A link to join your session will be sent to you by email the day before. If you’re not familiar with Zoom, don’t worry. All you have to do to join the call is click the link in your email.

You can join a Zoom call from your laptop or PC (you will need a webcam if your device doesn’t have one built in)—a bigger screen can be helpful, so you can see what’s going on and have a clear image of any documents that I might share. You can, of course, also use your tablet or mobile phone.

Ear buds or ear phones are helpful, but they are not essential during the call. However, they could come in very handy later to listen to any guided meditation, hypnosis, or breathing exercise audios that I record for you to listen to between sessions.

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

Ideally, it’s best to join online therapy from somewhere you won’t be disturbed and where you will also be able to make yourself comfortable. You don’t want interruptions or a hard chair spoiling your experience.

Most sessions will involve some sort of relaxation to calm and soothe the nervous system. Some people like to sit in an office chair for the first part of the session, then move to a comfier chair or armchair when it’s time for the hypnosis or mindful meditation part.

Notes & Nuggets of Wisdom

You might like to take notes during your session—so a notebook and pen might be a good idea. Some people use a journal to keep notes about their week, their therapy action plan or home practice, and anything they want to remember from the session. Hopefully, there will be moments of insight, and maybe even some nuggets of wisdom too.

I look forward to seeing you in session soon.
